Nails is an interactive art installation that explores the fraught dynamics of the beauty industry, ethnicity and migration. Together with Vietnamese nail salon owners and stylists I created a nail salon. Through documentary video and personal interaction, the audience is introduced to the stylists’ migrant backgrounds as they get their nails done. The installation is partly a tribute to the 39 Vietnamese migrant workers, many of them aspiring nail technicians, who died in a lorry container in Essex in October 2019. Nails will be shown at the Glass Pavilion of the Rietveld Academy (2022) at the Art Collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp, The Hague (2023) and at the theatre festival de Parade (2023)
